Women should be "teed off" about Golfing
|
Spring is right around the corner, and people will soon be resetting their clocks to get
an early start on golf, women though will still not get the same opportunities that men
have when they decide to join a golf and country club. Many clubs consider themselves
private and exclusive, which means to them, they can exclude members on the basis of
race, gender, sex and religion if they so choose. However, most states have laws that
would allow these so called "private" clubs to be charged with discrimination.
These types of clubs offer women "secondary membership" which allows
them to hold a derivative membership through their husbands. The husband is
usually the "primary member" and will receive voting rights and membership rights to
the club after a divorce. This can impact on women in so many ways. When she is
forced out of the club and is no longer accepted as a member, if she is even allowed to
rejoin and remain, she will now have to pay initiation dues which could be a s high as
$100,000 in some clubs. This is usually an impossible hurdle for women especially if
she has been a stay at home mother and has not worked in many years. What is also
not considered are the rights of the children to be at the club with their mother. When
they were a family they had enjoyed all the rights and privileges held during that time.
Now when divorce occurs, the rights of the female are dissolved under the
club's by-laws.
What about all the marital money that was spent on the club? Under divorce law in
most states the couple should be forced to divide that and share ownership under
equitable distribution. These clubs think they are above the law, and can pre-empt
family and state courts by deciding internally which spouse will get the membership
when the couple signs up. The husband therefore never has to fight.
Many clubs do consider children primary members through the father's membership.
However most daughters are usually pressured to give up their primary memberships
and relinquish them to their spouse when they marry. Thus the cycle of male
membership continues and when there is a divorce the daughter who would have
inherited a primary membership and voting rights is no longer allowed to even enter the
club!
The bylaws of certain clubs are at the very least misogynistic in the sense that women
have no right to property ownership, voting rights or stock options. However if one is to
take a closer look the daily revenue stream of these clubs, they would prove that they
are not truly private because they hold many events that are open to the public. Much of
their revenue comes from public sources, and not their members. Therefore these
clubs are really violating their nonprofit status under the IRS codes. The so called
"sponsoring an event" is just a ruse to allow a member to sponsor someone outside of
the club, who he may know only slightly or not at all, to be able to have an event, such
as a wedding reception. In reality, this rule is put in place so if the outside party defaults
and does not pay for the event, the sponsoring member of club is responsible for the
monies owed, but it has nothing do with exclusivity and the club holding itself out to be
private.
The other secret is that clubs have state issued liquor licenses, which prohibit
them discriminating on the basis of sex, gender, race, and other protected
classes. This makes these clubs VERY PUBLIC and NOT PRIVATE and further
subjects them to penalties if they do discriminate. In spite of this, clubs have
Men's Grill Rooms which do not allow women to enter, either to eat in or work
in. This too is a source of blatant discrimination under state and federal law.
Many of the clubs have pro-shops which are open to the public, once again outside
public funds and not private monies stream through.
The business world has become golf junkies, women should be able to conduct and
entertain business opportunities on the fairways in the same fashion as men have done
for years. So many business events now are carried out on golf courses which are
always run by men. Women are usually invited to just provide assistance to her male
colleague rather than her being recognized professionally.
Men have always golfed during prime time while women are only allowed to golf at off
times. There have been men who have insisted that their wives be allowed to golf with
them during their tee times. They have not been successful in achieving that right either.
If men were not given these exclusive rights to golf, they would argue that they were
being denied, their liberty and their pursuit of happiness. This would cause a global
revolution and countries would go to war over this.
In the past I have challenged golf clubs and forced change in their bylaws. Sometimes I
have been successful in changing some of their archaic, paternalistic, and medieval
practices. But permanent change remains to be seen. Women who do manage to join
these kinds of clubs are still not seen or accepted as the primary member.
The game of "Golf" has come to mean ....
Gentleman Only Ladies Forgotten.
My question is why do these women want to be members in the first place?
Tournaments should not be held at these clubs nor should charities or any business'
hold parties at golf clubs who have by-laws that discriminate. People should not
accept invitations or have their wedding parties at these golf clubs which are hostile to
women. Besides you can always go to a municipal golf club which is run by the town, is
cheaper, extends equal rights to both genders and not have to worry about whether
your husband's game of golf outlasts your marriage.
